Declutter my digital life

The sixth day of quarantine life in the same room with no internet connection..

What can I do?

Well I’m a workaholic before I resigned from my full time job. I couldn’t stand being too free on my own or without any plan on what to do. After two days of relaxing and chatting on the phone with friends, I knew I have to figure out something to do or else I’m going to feel guilty of wasting too much time. Still trying to change this bad habit of mine.

A phone alert popped out: iPhone backup failed because of not enough storage.

Yeah finally I knew to do without internet connection. For the first time I’m happy to see this alert after seeing it for almost more than a year now. It’s time to declutter my digital life and get everything organised. My first thing to do after become officially unemployed.

I always remember how much I love to systemise and organise everything including every folders, every documents, every softwares, my contact lists, my photos and my emails, but it just need to take too much time to do that. Now my folders scattered all over my desktop and the gallery of my phones are filled with photos of my renovation projects since two years ago. So first thing to do, delete whatever doesn’t serve me anymore. I scrolled back all the photos taken years ago, memories came flooding back. I contacted some of my old friends and it was happy to know that they are all doing great, especially in this super tension period where many people are worried of getting retrenched. Ahh I just miss all those crazy moments with them and hopefully can have a chance to do it again in future.

After deleting those unnecessary, it’s time to back up everything to my external hard disk. I remembered how sad I was once when I lost all my photos and documents in the past, I’m not going to allow that happen again.

While transferring the files, I realised that it is difficult to look for a particular files if I just copy and paste the whole thing into it. I need to categories them. So I created folders based on name of the event. It was a fun moment to go through all the photos taken.

Then I realised that my hard disk ran out of space again during back up. I looked through my hard disk to check if there is anything for me to delete and suddenly I found a folder named movies which I created in 2014. I am a movie freak and I couldn’t resist watching them all one final time before deleting them. In conclusion, this decluttering my digital life process taken me 3 days to complete and finally everything is in order. I am happy that I’m finally done with this struggling process and it’s time to get another external hard disk, obviously 500TB is only enough for 5years content. Well some of my friend did recommend me to back up everything in cloud service but I prefer something tangible. End of my sharing today and finally a fresh start for me. Tomorrow I will be released from quarantine and back to my family. I am so excited that finally able to meet them after a year.
