Think Big & Start Small

I remembered when I was in university, my pocket money was just sufficient to cover my expenses to stay in Kuala Lumpur. I have to save up for nearly a week just to have a better meal in some better-environment-restaurant or have fun with my friends. I love travel a lot but I can never have enough saving to go for a domestic trip. One day I sat back and finally decided to face the reality, how can I get more money? I don’t want my university life to be that dull because of me not having enough money to enjoy. I want to earn money and I need to, like a lot. It’s like some sort of goal to me at that time.

Then I pull out a paper and do some maths. I was having a part time sales job that time, besides of my pocket moneys that barely enough to cover my living expenses. My part time job was earning RM100 each day and each month will have 12 working days. Every month I would have made RM1200 if I save up all. Each year I would have save up RM14400. After calculating, I was very excited because I understand that if I continue working and saving based on my calculation, I will have RM14k by the end of the year. So I went to work happily knowing that I was one day closer to my goal everyday. I pushed myself to wake up and stop making excuses when I was lazy to work. I rejected a lot of unnecessary party and clubbing because I knew I will not hit my target if I attended. By the end of the year, I did save up RM14000 in my saving account. That was the first time I had 5 figure saving in my account, and I was so proud of myself.

Fast forward today, I was thinking if that time I do not take out that piece of paper and do the calculation, how my life would be? What I earned through that experience is not only that RM14000 but understanding that everything is achievable by starting small and being consistent. Since that time, whenever I planned to start something new, I would imagine what is my target and have a plan on how to achieve that goal by taking small action consistently. This is a very powerful thing because when our brain set up a target and a solid plan, subconsciously we will tend to push whatever obstacles that pop up until the goal is achieved.

So think big and start small. Eventually we will hit our goal.
